Produced by DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures, it is the first computer animated movie to be directly produced in a stereoscopic 3-D format. Animation movies are always fun to watch and specially so if it happens to be Monsters vs. Aliens, which has enough humour, action and special effects to keep you glued to your seats.

Famous stars like Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson and Paul Rudd have lent their voices to the varied characters. The movie shows how Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) is hit by a meteorite on the day of her wedding to weatherman Derek Dietl (Paul Rudd), absorbing a substance called quantonium and growing into a giantess. Fearing people's lives, the police send her to a prison where she comes across General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland), B.O.B. (Seth Rogen), a brainless, indestructible gelatinous blob; Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), a mad scientist with the head and abilities of a cockroach; the Missing Link (Will Arnett), an amphibious fish-ape hybrid; and Insectosaurus, a colossal grub that is even larger than Susan.

Where on one hand Susan yearns to get back her normal life, the movie takes us to Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson), who detects the quantonium radiation emanating from Earth and deploys a gigantic robotic probe to find and extract it from its source, Susan. After a botched attempt by the President of the United States (Stephen Colbert) to make first contact with the robot, it begins destroying everything in sight, resisting all conventional military force. Finally, the monsters are handed over the task to fight the robot promising them freedom in return.

Amidst all this, the movie takes an emotional turn when Derek breaks up with Susan, leaving her feeling extremely isolated and lonely. Amidst a lot of action and excitement, the monsters successfully destroy the robot. Monsters vs Aliens then shows how Susan goes back to her normal life, is too happy to get rid of Derek, who once again tries to get in touch with her for his own benefit and how the monsters stumble upon their next mission and get ready to rescue the world.

As a unique promotional strategy, Bank of America gave away vouchers which covered the cost of an upgrade to a 3-D theatrical viewing of the film for its customers.

By grossing $59.3 million in 4,104 theaters during the opening weekend, the movie proved its mettle by completely gripping the audience and their imagination. It was released in DVD and Blu-ray in the US and Canada on September 29, 2009 and will be released on October 26, 2009 in the UK. A Halloween special entitled "Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space" is also in the offing. I'm a simple man -- simple pleasures, some would even say I may be simple-minded. Humbug. I recently went to my local video store. I guess I should say my local "DVD" store, but old habits die hard. The double-time march of technology moves so quickly it's hard keep pace. In fact, I only recently have finished converting all my music tapes with CDs. And it only took me 10 years to do it.

Imagine my dread when the iPod entered the picture. I knew the writing was on the wall with regards to my CD collection. The problem is, which one do I use? The Touch? The Nano? The Mosquito? I think a waiting strategy is in order. By the time I have the cash to buy one, the newest one will be on the market. But I digress.

Trolling through the narrow aisles, looking for something to rent that my wife wouldn't object to, I couldn't help but notice the 60-inch HDTV playing a Disney cartoon. It was hard to turn my head away from it as it dealt with talking animals. I was so mesmerized I forgot why I was there. I forgot my name, the time, even where I lived. The Technicolor brilliance of the images moving on the screen had me thoroughly enthralled. Then, faintly -- in the distance -- I heard honking.

When my wife swept into the store some time later, she shook me by the shoulders screaming, "What's wrong with you? You've been standing there for ten minutes -- didn't you hear me honking?" I brushed her aside and noticed the Blu-Ray player bolted underneath the screen. It was a revelation. I started blinking again and cleared my vision to see the shelves directly in front of me were filled with Blu-Ray discs.

Later that night, I barely noticed the fact I was throwing away my VHS collection and unhooking my video cassette player. I had rented a stack of brilliant new DVDs and was eager to get my new Blu-Ray player up and running. Covered in eager sweat, I finally settled down to watch my first rental around 10 o'clock. Black Fury: Hard hitting melodrama in reference to exploitation of coal miners, with Muni as a strong "hunk" who gets in over his head. Practical, and remarkably filmed, but it's a tad choppy.
