Top Adventure Movies - Take The Adventure Movie Quiz

By Shawn Flynn

Over the years there have been a number of great adventure movies that leave you with the feeling of complete wonder and amazement. When choosing my list of the all time greatest adventure movies, I used a combination of the unforgettable ones I had watched growing up, and a few of the more recent ones that I think will remain memorable in the years to come.

This list is a mixture of fantasy, action and drama, and each movie involves an adventurous story, which I believe is the basis for any top adventure movie.

1) character 1 - The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug. -character 2 - Skynet fights back. character 1 - Yes. It launches its missiles against the targets in Russia. -character 3 -Why attack Russia? Aren't they our friends now? -character 1 - Because Skynet knows the Russian counter-attack will eliminate its enemies over here.

3) For over a thousand generations, the (blank) knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic... before the dark times... before the empire.

3) Hilts - Wait a minute. You aren't seriously suggesting that if I get through the wire... and case everything out there... and don't get picked up... to turn myself in and get thrown back in the cooler for a couple of months so you can get the information you need? Bartlett Yes.

4) When I was in China on the All-American Ping Pong team, I just loved playing ping-pong with my Flexolite ping pong paddle.

5) (muttered speaking) - Tells you something bout your state a mind don't it? Its got you hearin things'-got yer nerves shot. Its got you smoking... You know it's true nobody ever really quits. Smoker's a smoker when the chips are down and your chips are down, pretty much

6) I was sheriff of this county when I was twenty-five years old. Hard to believe. My grandfather was a lawman; father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time; him up in Plano and me out here. I think he's pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old time sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lotta folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough'd never carry one; that's the younger Jim. Gaston Boykins wouldn't wear one up in Camanche County. I always liked to hear about the oldtimers. Never missed a chance to do so. You can't help but compare yourself against the oldtimers. Can't help but wonder how theyd've operated these times. There was this boy I sent to the 'lectric chair at Huntsville Hill here a while back. My arrest and my testimony. He killt a fourteen-year-old girl. Papers said it was a crime of passion but he told me there wasn't any passion to it. Told me that he'd been planning to kill somebody for about as long as he could remember. Said that if they turned him out he'd do it again. Said he knew he was going to hell. "Be there in about fifteen minutes". I don't know what to make of that. I sure don't. The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say, "O.K., I'll be part of this world."

7) character 1 - If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword... -character 2 - ...and you have my bow... - character 3 - ...and my axe. -character 4 - You carry the fate of us all, little one. If this is indeed the will of the Council, then (characters name) will see it done.

8) Listen. Since I've met you I've nearly been incinerated, drowned, shot at, and chopped into fish bait. We're caught in the middle of something sinister here, my guess is dad found out more than he was looking for and until I'm sure, I'm going to continue to do things the way I think they should be done

9) Okay, I don't want to know nothing. I never saw you throw that gentleman off the balcony. All I care about is: are you happy with your haircut?

10) The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an emperor. Striking story! But now, the people want to know how the story ends. Only a famous death will do. And what could be more glorious than to challenge the Emperor himself in the great arena? - 23815

Frank Sinatra and Nelson Riddle: A Musical Match Made In Heaven

By Davis Hawthorne

When considering the greatness of Frank Sinatra--both as an individual and in the music he created--it is important to place his achievements within the context of the man's life. It is easy to forget that there was a time when he wasn't 'The Chairman of the Board' and when he wasn't regarded as the greatest male popular vocalist in history. There was a time when he was just another washed up teen idol trying to figure out a way to jump start his career and continue collecting a paycheck for being a singer. And then there were his personal problems--the love of his life, Ava Gardner had left him, his vocal chords were shredded from overuse, and he was on the skids financially as well as no longer in demand professionally. Frank recalled this time in his life by saying "It was all Mondays."

Not only was Sinatra's career in shambles, but the A&R people at Columbia Records had no clue what to do about it. The low point of their efforts was an attempt to reinvent the greatest popular singer in history as a 'novelty act' by pairing him with producer Mitch Miller. The most wretched by-product for their brief working relationship was a song called 'Mama Will Bark', on which Sinatra shared the mic with a busty singer named Dagmar while some clown barked like a dog and howled in the background. After these dismal recordings failed to jumpstart his career Sinatra was dropped by Columbia records in 1952.

In 1953, June Hutton and Jo Stafford brought him to the attention of Capitol Records A&R man Dave Dexter, Jr. This led to a deal with the label, which began an era that many 'Sinatra-philes' consider his best work. Frank worked with Axel Stordahl (June Hutton's husband, with whom he had worked at Columbia) and these sessions produced some decent recordings, including "I'm Walking Behind You" and "Lean Baby", but nothing incredibly significant. Dexter wanted Frank to try something different, and with Stordahl leaving to accept a job with Eddie Fisher in New York, he agreed reluctantly to a pairing with Nelson Riddle.

The Riddle/Sinatra collaboration was an unabashed success. Their early sessions produced among other songs "I've Got The World On The String" which is something of a 'shot heard round the world' for Sinatra's career and popular music in general. The well known standard was given new vibrancy with Riddle's buoyant arrangement and Sinatra's new found vocal maturity. The song was only a modest commercial success at the time, reaching #14 on the single charts, but became a classic. It was also a favorite of Sinatra himself, and he continued to perform the song live, frequently as a show opener, for the rest of his life.

When examined in a modern context, Sinatra's career 'reinvention' is almost mind boggling. It's difficult to envision a star of today popular with the teenage set--like The Jonas Brothers for example--becoming accepted as a serious vocalist for adults. Sinatra not only became a critical and popular sensation, but would go down in history as arguably the most important entertainer ever in American popular culture. None of this would have happened were it not for the magical pairing of Sinatra with Nelson Riddle. - 23815

Frank Sinatra Goes Bossa Nova With Antonio Carlos Jobim

By David Glisan

Critics often dismiss Frank Sinatra as a mere 'pop' singer and don't afford him the respect that they give to his contemporaries. He's often accused of lacking technical vocal mastery and simply a singer who reworked a 'formula' over and over again. While Sinatra certainly knew what he liked and what worked for him, to belittle his artistry as a vocalist is unfair and displays a superficial knowledge of his body of work. Perhaps the finest example of his vocal excellence is his work with Brazilian guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Jobim is often credited with popularizing Bossa Nova music outside of Brazil. He worked with Sinatra on an album of samba tinged standards entitled Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The work was a critical and commercial success, and Sinatra would hold Jobim in very high regard for the rest of his life. Sinatra had the highest respect for Jobim as an artist and liked him as a friend. Sinatra would often introduce his performances of Jobim songs live by remembering his Brazilian colleague in very fond terms or expressing the hope that the two men could work together in the future.

"Wave", written by Jobim and arranged by Eumir Deodato, is among the best of all of the Sinatra/Jobim collaborations. It features some amazing vocal work by Sinatra, including perhaps the lowest notes he ever hit on a recording. It is said that for the rest of his life Sinatra would listen to "Wave" just to hear how good he sounds hitting the bass notes.

This song originally intended as the opening track of a second volume of Sinatra/Jobim collaborations, but it was never released as such. The story that has circulated over the years is that the Sinatra/Jobim album put on the back burner so that Reprise could release the concept album "Watertown" instead. As an commercial decision, it's tough to fathom the rationale if this is the case. "Watertown" sold fewer copies than any other Sinatra release on Reprise. Another story is that Sinatra himself nixed the release because he hated the cover art which featured the 'King of Swingers' wearing a windbreaker and standing in front of a Greyhound bus. Hard to blame him for disliking that image if this version of the story is true.

"Wave", along with the majority of the songs intended for the "Sinatra/Jobim" album finally surfaced on "Sinatra and Company" in 1970. The "b" side is some of Sinatra's ill-fated attempts to cover popular songs of the day ("Close To You", It's Not Easy Being Green", "Leaving On A Jet Plane"). These are recordings that even the most devoted Sinatra-philes collect for the sake of completing a collection only, and a stark contrast to the masterful work with Jobim on the album's "A" side. "Wave" also appeared on the Reprise box set and of course of the "Complete Reprise Recordings" suitcase collection.

Critic Will Friedwald, who may have written more about Sinatra's body of work than anyone, praised his recordings with Jobim as having a "flexibility and delicacy, as if they could be blown about by a soft Brazilian breeze". In any case, the Sinatra/Jobim sessions certainly rank among the finest vocal work of Sinatra's amazing career. - 23815

Pirate Costumes For Children and Adults

By Mik Smith

Long John Silver, Captain Hook, Black Sam, Black Bart and Jack Sparrow. The adventure and romance of pirates appeals to nearly everyone. The sad truth is that many pirates ate poorly, and often lived on bananas and limes. Very few actually became fabulously wealthy and many of them died at a young age.

Since the early days of film when there were such classics as 'Captain Blood ' in 1935 and 'The Sea Hawk ' in 1940 there have been very few films about pirates that are worth any real mention. Only a few examples come to mind such as Roman Polanski's 'Pirates' in 1986 and 'The Goonies' which made good use of a pirate-based storyline. Another movie that should also be mentioned, albeit for different reasons is 1995's 'Cutthroat Island'. This calamity of a movie ended up costing an unbelievable $100 million dollars at the time. The film went on to recover a mere $11 million dollars. The Guinness Book of World Records describes it as 'the largest box office loss' whilst The Washington Post said that 'Cutthroat Island's' lame cliff-hangers are enough to make you a cliff jumper'.

Clothing certainly won't be a problem. Pirates wore quite a variety of garments and with a little imagination and minimal outlay you can soon look like a true blue-blooded buccaneer! Think of simple articles like eye patches, bandanas and wide leather belts. A stripey black and white top wouldn't be out of place; maybe it could be worn with some old black jeans.

As a buccaneer a lady can become decidedly wicked and adventurous with her costume! There are a lot of pirate design costumes that are saucy and exciting. Some costumes may even include telescope, eye-patch and dagger! If you are feeling daring then you could opt for dressing as a sexy pirate wench complete with a lace up front halter dress, fishnet stockings and a sash round your middle.

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films have each been received very positively by both adults and children alike. They are the equivalent of the hugely successful 'Indiana Jones' series with Harrison Ford. They are good family movies, something that is becoming harder to come across these days

Today 'Pirates of the Caribbean' has become one of the largest movie franchises of all time. There have been numerous video games based on the films (including an online game that was released by Disney themselves), a special 'Pirates of the Caribbean' edition of Monopoly and even a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' version of the Battleships game is available.

In interviews, after the release of the first film in the series, 'The Curse of the Black Pearl', Johnny Depp confessed that he had partly modeled his character on aging rocker Keith Richards. Richards made a cameo appearance in the third film of the series, 'At World's End', as Captain Teague who is actually Captain Jack Sparrow's father. He was supposed to have made an appearance in 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' but the writers couldn't manage to fit him into the story.

There are all sorts of possibilities for a really good party. Let your imagination go wild. Whether you are dressing in pirate garb for a fancy dress costume party or you are planning a themed evening with friends you can be sure that it will great fun! - 23815
