How To Play The Guitar Fast For Beginners

By Luke B. Hogans

So you want to learn to play the guitar quickly. Many people have that desire, but there are a few basic things you need to learn, that will drastically improve your chances for success. First off, you need to be able to tune your guitar. It will do you no good if you learn to play with a guitar out of tune. If you don't have a good enough ear to tune it by ear, then go to a music store and pick up a tuner.

Take a trip to the music store and grab a tuner, and while you're there, try and get your hands on a chart that shows all the guitar notes, and if you can get hold of one, get a chart that shows as many of the different chord positions as you can find. Tune your guitar, and then start with learning all the notes on the guitar, all the way up.

Memorize the notes all the way up the neck. You should be able to say a note, and put your finger on it immediately. This also helps you get familiar with moving around on the neck of the guitar. Now it's time to learn some chords. Oh yeah, that's the other thing you needed to get at the music store, a chord chart. In case you already went to the store, I'll give you the positioning for a few common chords. To play the G chord, place your fourth finger on the top string in the third fret, third finger on the next string down, second fret, and your baby finger on the bottom string, third fret. This is the G chord, and once you practice it, if you lift your baby finger off, and place your first finger on the bottom string in the first fret, you'll be playing G7.

D chord is relatively simple, place your second finger on the bottom string, your third finger on the next string up, third fret, and your first finger on the G string, your second and first fingers play second fret. Start strumming at the D string, which is the first string above your top finger.

The A chord should be relatively simple for you. I know many people including my Dad who play this one with two fingers, but it is recommended to play it with three. Anyhow, here we go, simply place your number 3 finger on the B string in the second fret, then place finger number 1 on the G string in the second fret followed by number 2 finger on the D string in the second fret. That's all there is to the A chord. Now the reason that it is recommended to use three fingers for this chord. Simply lift finger number 1 off, and you're playing A7.

Now you can practice these chords, and any others you can learn the positioning of with your chart. Once you get fairly comfortable with the chords and can change back and forth between them, start playing along with some music. You may not get it right at first, but hey you're still learning.

An alternate practice method you can play with, is to practice picking the notes on your guitar, I know you've already mastered them, but now you can use them to master training your ear. Pick a note on your guitar, and try to sing it.

Practice with a variety of notes, until you can pick it and sing it almost instantly. Then if you want to really get impressive, try to sing a note, and then pick the appropriate note on your guitar. Now you're well on your way to learn to play the guitar quickly. If you know a good guitar player, ask them if they could teach you some good tips, and then practice, practice, practice. - 23815
