Buying Portable Boom Box

By Stephen Nepstein

More than likely you remember when the first portable boom box options came around. They were a gigantic part of the '80s, and it seemed that about everyone had one of their own. Having a portable boom box is still an excellent option, even yet today.

Today if you need to have a portable boom box of your own, you have several different options that you can consider. First of all, you can consider purchasing one of the older vintage boom boxes that are out there today. They're often still in great shape and they play will, bringing you a pleasant blast from your past.

Naturally, not only can you buy a portable boom box from years ago, but there are new options available that include the newest technology in them. The best of technology is included in these new options, e.g. CD players, satellite radio, and some even supply a docking station for your iPod.

You'll be able to find some simple options as well when you are searching for a portable boom box. Some of them merely give you a radio, while there are others that are water-resistant, allowing you to take them with you when you're near water. Some of the more basic options are great for out by the pool or beach, or even in the garage.

There are some more sophisticated options that are available as well if you want rather more from your portable boom box. There are some that have nice CD players in them, allowing you to play more than just the radio. If you love listening to your favorite CDs all of the time, then this is a great option for you.

Another great option to search for when you're trying to get a conveyable boom box is one that incorporates speakers that detach. The detachable speakers enable you to easily play your radio so you can hear it outside without having to lug the entire radio outside.

A portable boom box is a fine addition to any kids' room too. There are some boom boxes that are specially designed for youngsters, offering a sturdy design that holds up well, even if it is accidentally dropped. While these boom boxes are on the simple side, kids are bound to enjoy them.

Having a portable boom box is an excellent idea. You get to take tune with you. They can be taken on a picnic, to the pool, or even out on the porch so you can get pleasure from your music. So think about a portable boom box. Either goes with one that is old and unique or goes with one of the newer high tech options available today - 23815

Explaining How Closed Captioning Came To Be

By Adrienne Arno

Closed captioning is the process that permits those who are hearing impaired to gain access to the dialogue on television programming by presenting the transcript on the lower third of the screen. The FCC passed the first|initial|original|earliest closed caption ing law in 1993. This required all analog television receivers with screens larger than 13 inches sold and/or manufactured in the US include a built-in decoder to display closed display. Congress became involved several years later with the 1996 decision to demand all video programming distributors including cable TV, broadcasters, and satellite distributors to close caption their programming.

The FCC added to this edict a year soon after with a explicit transition schedule that obliged all distributors to increase|expand the amount of programming that contained captioning. As a final point, in July 2002, the FCC approved a second law requiring digital television receivers to add closed captioning display components.

Being a part of the communications industry while working at the American Movie Company has given me a personal look at the influence these decisions have had on most studio productions. One of these effects has been how video and television productions have adapted the use of the teleprompter.

While most people recognize why closed captioning is valuable, many people don't know how the teleprompter performs a key function in the conveyance of closed captioning to your television. There are two sectors into which closed captioning systems are separated: On-Line systems and Off-Line systems. This is when the teleprompter becomes important.

On-Line captioning is the teleprompter-based solution widely used by broadcasters and news stations. In this situation, pre-scripted stories are fed from the newsroom automation system to both the teleprompter and to the closed caption encoder. This information usually does not include closed caption control codes but rather relies on the encoder inside the screen itself to include the appropriate codes each time an ASCII carriage return is received.

The regard for this type of system is based on the fact that neither a steno-captioner nor a computer with high-priced software is needed. In many cases, the teleprompter system is already in place and closed captioning is easily added for only the cost of the encoder.

Closed captioning is an exciting field that offers many opportunities for both the television broadcaster and the video producer. Hopefully, this introduction will help you to make informed decisions should you need to choose a caption service provider, obtain equipment, or offer advice to those who will make these choices.

Those heavily involved in Closed Captioning for multilingual purposes also greatly appreciate the fact that structures are in place to make this easier. - 23815

Sex And The City - The Characters

By Lola Jasminia

Don't watch Sex And The City with the intention of trying to define or categorize Carrie Bradshaw's sense of style. Because there is no definition. Carrie, played by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, is the most fashion-forward of the group and a peek into her closet will reveal everything from vintage wear to Gap Jeans to haute couture. The mix is outrageous and fun! While Manolos are always a must, each season, Carrie offers up a different, signature fashion statement " her nameplate necklace in season 1, the flower pins in season 2, then Fendis, then gloves, then hats,....

Carrie's friend, Samantha Jones, is a high-powered PR executive who just happens to have a killer body! By day, she wears suits in bold colors that show off her curves. But by night, watch out! Samantha really turns it up with some extremely racy ensembles that leave very little to the imagination!

Another of Carrie's dear friends, Miranda Hobbes, chooses to dress a little more professionally during the day. As an attorney, her position calls for smart, dark suits, and she wears them very well. She prefers sneakers and sweats on the weekends but in the evening, watch out! This redhead is a real knockout!

Charlotte York is perhaps the most prim and proper of the group. Her perfectly coordinated pastels reflect her Park Avenue lifestyle. Always crisp and refreshing, she sometimes appears grim in her fashion taste. But we all know the truth, don't we? Watch out Atlantic City!

As the Main Man on Sex And The City, Mr. Big is a successful New York businessman who prefers his Armani suits. And he wears them very well! We don't see Big in jeans or sweats. He's not that kind of guy. We see him in Black Armani, Black limos or....a bed!

I don't know how Miranda was able to resist Steve Brady for so long! Those beautiful blue eyes behind those glasses get me every time! Jeans and a T-shirt are his attire of choice and I think we only see him in a suit a couple of times throughout the whole series. In fact, the first suit he wears, Miranda has to buy for him!

The man who eventually captures Charlotte's heart, Harry Goldenblatt, is short, bald, very hairy and somewhat of a schlupp. But he's so lovable! As an attorney, he dresses in smart, professional suits during the day. But in the morning and on his days off, he much prefers his birthday suit!

And last, but certainly not least, there's Jerry Jerrod, aka Smith. An aspiring actor and fashion model, we see Smith in everything from suits to jeans to leather to...nothing! And his hair goes from long to short, eventually to bald as he shaves his head to support Samantha in her fight against breast cancer. - 23815

Guitar Effects Pedals: A Buying Guide

By R. S. Rasnick

Guitar effects pedals have been on the scene since the 1960's when guitar-based music became predominant. An engineer named Roger Mayer is credited with inventing the first guitar effects device, a "fuzz" box, that evolved into the modern distortion and overdrive pedal, and the wah pedal. Mayer's clients included such noted rock n' rollers as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Jimi Hendriz. Supposedly, Mayer created the first effects pedal for his friend in the early 1960's. Now, countless effects pedals are used by guitar players every day.

Effects pedals are so popular with guitar players, especially electric guitarists, because they can easily expand the tonal range of the guitarists' sound. True, it's possible to use the guitar amplifier to change these sounds, but most amplifers do not have built-in effects and the settings would have to be changed from song-to-song. Usually, guitarists want to be able to affect their sounds during a song or in various sections as well, so it makes sense keeping the pedals in front of them so they can change it themselves.

Not unlike the electric guitar and amplifier itself, effects pedals contribute to guitarists having a broad range of tonal expression. Today, even classical and acoustic guitarists use these effects, though they tend to avoid the distortion, overdrive, and wah pedals used by electric guitarists.

Since the first pedals were created, rack-mounted guitar effects have become more common. These were more popular during the 1980's, thanks to companies like Yamaha and Eventide. Since rack gear requires a more sophisticated and time-consuming approach (not to mention considerably more money) than pedals, most guitar players prefer effects pedals for their simplicity and tweakability.

So, with their effects usually mounted on pedalboards (a way to transport and store effects pedals), electric guitar players have only to "stomp" on the pedal box (hence the name "stompbox") to instantly switch on or switch off an effect. The wah-wah pedal and volume pedal is a little different than the others in that the player "rocks" the pedal back and forth to adjust the sound.

Most pedals, though, have a simple on-off feature. For instance, the ubiquitous distortion tone of hard rock and metal guitar players can be instantly switched off and the guitar's "clean channel" allowed to be played, to give a different feel to different sections of a song. Another simple stomp, and the distorted tone comes roaring back.

Guitar players go through a great deal of effort to tweak the settings on their guitar, their amps, and their configuration of effects pedals to get their "just right" or signature sound. Popular effects devices include distortion, overdrive, chorus, flanger, echo, delay, vibrato, tremolo, flanging, and pitch-shifting, just to name a few. These effects can have drastic changes on a guitarist's sound.

If you are interested in broadening your sound or just trying something different, then you should give some of the above effects a try. Who knows? They may inspire your next killer solo! - 23815

Free Music Online Tips

By Susan Reynolds

Free music download programs are a popular way to have unlimited access to free music. And with CDs easily costing $15 a piece, what could be better than free music? However, it is important to realize that this free music could be putting not just your computer at risk, but you and your privacy as well. File sharing can also get you into legal trouble with the Recording Industry Association of American (RIAA) or the Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA). Everyone knows that people who illegally share music online have been actively sought after by the RIAA for several years now, but now the MPAA is also seeking to find and sue those who illegally share movies.

Being prosecuted and sued is not all you have to worry about. There are many other dangers you must keep in mind, such as adware, spyware, spoofing, and pornopgrahy.. What follows is an overview of these risks and how they might affect you.

1) Adware ? Often, adware has been installed in the file sharing program. Large media companies use this adware to help generate revenue from a product that is supposed to be free. If this adware has been installed into the download program that you are using, it can cause problems with your computer. Often this adware consists of large banner ads that will take up a lot of room on your computer and cause problems with operation.

2) Spyware - Spyware is often installed in shareware downloads, including free music download programs. Spyware secretly sneaks around in the back-round of your computer gathering information about you and your surfing habits. Spyware has the ability to perform actions hidden to you, and can even change files and your computer system settings.

3) Spoofing - Many file sharing programs are swollen with corrupt and fake files. Spoofing happens when think you are downloading a song, but you get a corrupt music file instead of the song download. A new type of spoofing problem occurs with a brief 20 to 30 second music loop that continues to play over and over for 3 - 4 minutes. There is talk on the net that the RIAA may be behind many of these spoofing plans as a way to get people to pay for legal music downloads.

Pornography- Pornographers will often disguise their software as free music downloads or even as free games to entice you to click on the link. When you click on one of these files, you are directed to a porn site. This can be a very serious issue for those who have children that are using file sharing programs.

Considering all the above issues, is it really safe to download free music online? There are some serious risks that the user needs to be aware of before considering downloading music, including possible legal sanctions brought on by the RIAA for copy right violations. It's important to make sure you are knowledgeable in this area before downloading free music. Use your common sense. Your best bet is to find a free legal download program where you can download music for absolutely free. - 23815
