Milton Berle And His Television Legacy

By Ross Everett

As if you needed another example of how the mainstream media just doesn't get it, consider this: Entertainment Weekly's 2002 obituary of Milton Berle was a mere half page. Berle didn't even get the page to himself-he shared it with a similar sized obit for Dudley Moore, who died just a few hours later. Both men were afforded less ink than Director Billy Wilder, who also passed away in a rough week for Hollywood types. Not meaning any disrespect to Dudley Moore, a funny and talented but to suggest that Berle's legacy was of similar impact to the British funnyman is absurd.

Berle wasn't only a pioneer of television, he completely blazed the trail for the nascent medium and the entertainment industry it created. Before Berle, no one cared what was on TV because it was all forgettable throwaway programming like pro wrestling on the Dumont network and game shows like 'Queen for a Day'. After Berle, people began to seek for quality programming. He created the need for publications like TV Guide, and really the entire concept of 'prime time' network programming. Berle's "Texaco Star Theater" was the first big hit on television and put up ratings that are unfathomable today-it would routinely draw 80%+ of the television audience and hit over 90% on a few occasions. By way of comparison, consider that the NFL and the TV networks consider it a great year when the Superbowl draws a 70% share.

When people started to care what was on when, it beget TV Guide and publications like Entertainment Weekly and celebrity TV networks like E! are just little more than that publications progeny. The fact that EW doesnt realize that Berle put the seeds in the ground is the problem with mass media today: they just dont get the fact that some people, places, things or concepts are of greater value than others. Their tendency is to elevate the superficial and banal to a higher level of importance, while simultaneously trying to minimize and dumb down that which is deserving of great praise.

The man who would be dubbed 'Mr. Television' was born on July 12, 1908 and his showbiz career began in vaudeville. This led to the television show that made him an institution. His TV success wasnt a matter of him being in the right place at the right time. He had an uncanny understanding of how to utilize the medium, and an ability to adapt his stage act to the new audience. Berle worked constantly throughout his 88 year career, even earning an Emmy Award nomination in the late 1990's.

One of the most telling indications of the sort of man Milton Berle was can be seen in the near universal goodwill he engendered during his life. Everyone regardless of stature or importance gives the same account"a quick witted, easy-going, fun loving gentleman who enjoyed the finer things in life. Of particular note was the omnipresent cigar. While George Burns may have been a more famous cigar emissary, Berles tastes were far more refined in this regard. Burns typically smoked inexpensive machine made sticks, while Berles tastes tended toward high end Montecristos.

Milton Berle was not only responsible for the very institution of modern show business, he is an icon and role model for all men. His legacy lives on every time someone turns on a television, and he lived a life of pleasure and kindness as a consummate gentleman. - 23815

Learn to Play Piano by Ear

By Michelle Edward

Is everything you have learned as far as playing piano been correct? Think about the following information, and compare it to what you have learned is the latest as far as playing a piano.

Think on this information...

Do you desire to be able to play your piano without hassling with music books or sheets?

Or maybe you want to be able to hum a good tune?

Have you for years longed to play, except your eyesight is poor and makes it difficult?

Haven't you learned that if you can hum a certain tune, that you can learn to play it?

Many professional musicians, didn't begin their particular careers using instructors or manuals. They actually learned by playing tones that they hear and following the music's rhythm. Not a piece of sheet music or teacher in sight.

1 - Get your things in order. You will of course require a keyboard or piano, whichever you have. You just have to be able to use at least 3 fingers. You will need adequate time for practicing. Make sure the piano is in tune.

2. Remember that the piano is an instrument that is comprised of 88 keys. Along these are 12 straight notes. The first white key is the A - note, next white note is B, C, D, E, F, G.

Following the G white note, then it starts over with an A note, and it repeats the other white notes as listed. This order of notes is repeated for around 7 times until the rest of the white notes have been repeated. The black notes that are the sharps and flats are also repeated.

3. The C note is also known as the Home Key. To trace the C note, it is the white key on the left side of two black keys. If you're still amazed, stare at your piano. You'll notice that at the middle part is the C - note. Thus, that would be the first major chord.

If you are not up to date on your piano facts, how does the affect your playing? Be sure to keep up on all vital piano playing information.

The thumb of your right hand will serve as number 1 because it is put at the C straddled in the middle. From there, count all keys going to the right. Include the black keys.

When you reach the number 5 you have found the second note of the C chord. This is played with your middle finger. Then start at 5 and count until you reach 8, that is the last not of the chord and is played with your pinkie finger.

Now hit these keys together and an impressive sound is accomplished.

4 - Memorize the above sequence to use in your playing...1, and 5, and 8 to count. You can do with any note as a starting point, as long as you count right, be sure to count those sharps and flats.

Use these chords as your roots. This will work perfectly if you decided to start on a sharp. You'll be making a sharp chord by then.

5. If you have time on practicing these easy chords, you'll finally realize that through counting and attentive listening, you'll easily get through.

If you drop the 5 and go to 4 then you will have a minor chord, in place of the major chord.

Then if you are doing the C chord, then just move the finger to the left one key and you will play a C minor chord.

By simply listening, you are able in tell the difference sound wise. You will be capable of spotting slight changes in the tune, as long as you can hear okay.

Some advice:

Don't just stay in the piano's middle section. Travel around to other areas of the piano though for more unique sound.

Learn how to play with both hands, utilizing all your fingers. Don't just peck around with one or maybe two fingers.

Practice, practice, and more practice.

This is up-to-date information that has been covered in this article. Keep your mind open for future developments though that may be found through research. - 23815
