Guitar For Beginners - Where do I start?

By Ari Cooper-Smith

Guitar for beginners i just that. All guitarist started somewhere learning the basics of how to play the guitar. Learning the guitar will take a lot of dedication and practice just like anything else if you want to improve. You will not be the next Jimmi Hendrix over night but rest assured that if you keep at it you will be able to pick things up quickly.

To start of with you should really learn some basci strumming patterns and perhaps some chords. This will give you a lot to start working on and practicing. If you practice each and every day you will see yourself improving dramatically. Don't overdo it though. Practice for short periods of time but very frequently. This is much better than to practice for hours once every month.

One of the most trying stages of learning guitar for beginners is the getting your opposite, strumming hand to be able to hold down the notes and chords you are attempting to play. An acoustic is a little more physically demanding due to the strings being larger but they are still essentially the same thing. You will go through about three or four months (if you practice regularly) of getting this hand to go through the motions of switching notes, hitting chords, and finding scales. While the study of music theory is important for any musician, focusing on the physical part of playing should be your number one objective when starting to play guitar.

After you have learnt how to play notes and move your hand along the the different frets the next thing you will need to work on is the way you strum. Nearly everyone strums their guitar a different way and this will create a different sound. It is crucial that right from the beginning you spend the necessary time learn how to strum your guitar properly. You must master this as you will be strumming a lot.

After you have learn to physically play the guitar and strum you will move on to playing actual songs. As you are learning guitar for beginners you should start of with very simple songs and move your way up. Break down the songs into parts and practice each part until you comfortable playing them. Once you have done this you can put it all together. You will see yourself improving very quickly and you will be able to motivate yourself.

Many people learning guitar for beginners don't see themselves improving as they don't play and practice enough. You must have a hunger to master the skills of a guitarist. Constantly play your guitar even if you are simply playing one chord. Just practice, practice and practice some more. - 23815
