Best Christmas 2009 Movie: Avatar
Avatar is a movie like no other out there, simply a masterpiece created by director James Cameron. It compares to his great blockbuster movies such as Titanic and the Terminator Series. Audiences who've watched the movie in 3-D have been truly amazed by the detail and realistic qualities of a film in which half of the characters are computer generated. Stunning visual effects and impressive use of 3-D graphics takes viewers out of their seats and puts them right into the movie. Remarkable imaginations and artistic qualities of everyone who has worked on creating the film set a new level in the film making industry.
Avatar is situated in the year 2154 and centered around a handicapped marine named Jake who lost his legs on a mission on Earth. The movie begins with Jake waking up from a 5 year trip to a moon called Pandora that is several light years away. He ended up signing up for a high-level corporate and military mission his brother Tom (who was a scientist) was working on and had died because he shared his genome structure.
On Pandora there a beings known as the navis who have sparkly blue skin and are 10 feet tall with tails and big eyes. The Avatar project, the one that Jake has signed up for, has created human-navi hybrids which can be linked and controlled by humans. The first thing that Jake does while controlling his Avatar is run as he hasn't felt the motion of walking ever since he lost his legs.
The story continues as Jake tours Pandora under Colonel Miles Quartich's orders, Jake is to find out more about the navis and their way of life as a covert mission in order to obtain unobtanium. Obtaining Unobtanium is the main goal of the humans at Pandora as it is used for energy and is very rare on Earth. However, the leader of the Avatar Program, Dr. Grace Augustine leads Jake with a different goal in mind, which is to study the behaviour and ways of the navi in order to learn new things and try and find a diplomatic solution for the humans' needs to extract the unobtanium from deposits under their sacred "Hometree."
Jake's Avatar gets separated on a trip and he finds his way to the navi tribe after several adventures. The navis agree to teach Jake their ways and Neytiri, the young female navi who found him, his teacher. Through the use of excellent cinematography and visual and sound effects, the director then shows the audiences the mysteries and adventures of Jake as he goes through his learning process to eventually become honoured as a navi man and falls in love with Neytiri.
The movie twists as the humans attack the navi tribe and Jake fights with his emotions to decide which side he is on. However, when he sees that the humans just want to kill the navis and capture the unobtanium deposits with greed, he decides to side with the navis and the way of their lives. He leads the navis against a final battle filled with 3-D creative works, amazing details, and excitement as he unites all the navi tribes in one last battle against the humans. - 23815
