A Few Quick Film Story Lines To Look At

By Frederick Patterson

It used to be that you had to go to the video store to get a movie. The next generation it seems will be getting their movies from movie downloads, avoiding any trips to the store. Here are some examples of movies you can acquire through a movie download site.

Cop Land: Freddy Hanlin is the Sheriff of Garrison New Jersey, a small town not too far from New York City. Freddy always want to be a New York City cop, but he is slightly deaf, so he never could. When internal investigator Mo Tilden shows up in town to look into potential police corruption, Freddie takes up the cause and starts to help out. Freddie is about to learn that the men he has always idolized might be doing some very bad things.

Adios, Sabata: A gunslinger becomes involved with Mexican revolutionaries. He helps himself to a box full of gold during the voyage. Adios Sabata (with Brynner rather than Lee Van Cleef) was titled Indio Black till dubbed and re-titled for U.S. viewing. Cast includes Yul Brynner, Dean Reed, Pedro Sanchez, and Gerard Herter. Directed by Blunt Kramer (1970-Western-l04 minutes)

La Promesse: Harrowing story of a boy being brought up by a dad who ruthlessly capitalizes on, unlawful immigrants as their assumed savior, and master. Trouble starts while the boy, who unconditionally obeys his dad unquestioningly, creates a bond with one of the illegal immigrants. Moving in its understated, we watch a young boy struggle with tough ethical issues. Cast includes Jeremie Renier, Olivier Gourmet, Assita Ouedraogo, and Rasmane Ouedraogo. (93 minutes,'96)

Bram Stoker's Dracula: Count Dracula is on a mission to find the one woman he truly ever loved. HE wants to be eternally reunited with her. He leaves Transylvania and goes to London to see if a woman who looks exactly like his love of centuries ago is in fact the woman he searches for.

The Last Samurai: This is a true epic story of a lost soldier who winds up fighting a war in a far away land. Hired by the emperor of Japan to train his army, he is quickly captured by the Samurai he was training the army to defeat. Living amongst these great people he comes to believe in the way of the Samurai. He winds up fighting on their side, with all of his heart.

The illustrated Man: Youthful drifter Drivas meets tattooed man Steiger, who is looking for the strange lady (Bloom), who "illustrated" his whole body. The drifter sees futuristic stories in three of the illustrations, most of which include megastar Steiger and, or Bloom and Drivas. The film is a disheartening, dull-paced adaptation of short stories from Ray Bradbury. Cast includes Rod Steiger, Claire Bloom, Robert Drivas, Don Dubbins, Jason Evers, Ton Weldon, and Christie Matchett. (103 minutes,'69)

Deliverance: This is an excellent re-creation of the Dickey novel of 4 Atlanta businessmen who get more than they can handle throughout a weekend canoe trip. McKinney and Coward are 2 of the most horrifying film scoundrels in history. The "Dueling Banjos" scene is very memorable. Film debuts of Beatty and Cox. James Dickey adjusted his own novel, and appears in the film as a sheriff. Ed O'Neill appears as a freeway watcher near end of film. Cast includes Cast includes Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox, Billy McKinney, Herbert "Dude" Coward, and James Dickey. (109 minutes,'72)

Fantastic Invasion of The Planet Earth: Discharged theatrically in 3-D, this movie was pretty much a disaster. A young couple finds themselves caught in a deserted town encircled in a mammoth bubble. The original title, The Bubble, was far less deceiving: there are no foreigners and no "invasion" in fact, and not much enthusiasm, either. Cast includes Filmed in widescreen Space-Vision. Cast includes Michael Cole, Deborah Walley, and Johnny Desmond. (91 minutes,'96)

Rentadick: Out of the nether-land between The Goon Show and Monty Python comes this romp written by Python buddies John Cleese and Graham Chapman, spoofing the classic private-detective films. An experimental nerve gas that paralyzes people from the waist down has been stolen, and Rentadick, Inc. is employed to track down the perpetrators. Cast includes Jim Clark, James Booth, Julie Ege, Ronald Fraser, Donald Sinden, Michael Bentine, Richard Briers, and Spike Milligan. (94 minutes,'72)

Those of you looking for file downloads could try a search with "Movie Sharing". A change in the phrase will sometimes get a better result. "Buy Movies Online" would be worth a try. - 23815
