Looking at the Samsung UE55B7020

By Don Sharpe

Out of the Box - First Views: Wow - most people are surprised by just how slim the UE55B7020 is - in reality less than an inch and a half in depth.The black sheer finish to the surround of the television looks good, as does the slim see-through connection between the screen and the stand. A different plus point is that Samsung has included all of the key parts within the set - a few manufacturers have required viewers to find a space for a detached box for such objects as the Freeview tuner.

Audio Quality: This leads to a drawback common in modern TVs - the audio quality is only run of the mill. The width of the UE55B7020 is too little to permit a decent sound system. It would be astute to look at adding a surround sound system.

Picture Quality: The exclusive promotion point of the UE55B7020 is the fact that it uses LED technology to supplant the usual fluorescent tube backlighting system found in other Televisions. Even though the backlighting technology is distinctive, the UE55B7020 remains a LCD TV. LED backlighting is supposed to have the following benefits:

* An LED backlight method uses a system of grids to generate a more even backlight across the screen.

* Faultless blacks are doable - not viable with established Televisions.

* The display responds earlier.

* The colour display is greater.

Connectivity: With 4 HDMIs, 2 USBs and a LAN connection, the UE55B7020 has all the connectivity you're likely to want for the near future. The USB connections allow the playing of a variety of multimedia file formats as well as to your wireless network (you will want a separate dongle.) And the LAN network port permits straightforward access to files on your home network.

The main remote control is a somewhat eccentrically formed gadget, a tad like a shoehorn. A little awkward to use at first, but OK once you're used to it. The second, smaller remote simply allows volume power and channel changes.

Expense in use: The UE55B7020 consumes around 115W in service - well below the customary requirement. Less than a watt on stand by.

To Wrap Up: The UE55B7020 has only manifestly average sound output, as with most flatscreen Televisions. However the rich colours and deep blacks it produces outperform other similarly priced TVs. - 23815
