Motion Picture Adaptations From Celebrated Children's Books

By Corey Andrews

A lot of of the best kids books have been modified to be favorite films. Popular children's books that have stood the test of time are often excellent candidates to make a great motion picture, but, when a book is made into a motion picture it always begs the question of whether the book is better or the film is better and how closely does the movie go along the story line of the book?

A current film adaptation from a children's book is "The Spiderwick Chronicles" by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. There are actually 5 books in the series but just the single movie so far. The film follows the venture of a family as they go into a new home. The kids find a peculiar aged book that leads them to a world with elves, goblins, trolls, dwarves and other creatures. The film is from 2008.

The favorite children's book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl was first available in 1964. It has been adapted into two admired films, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and from 2005 "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.

One of the most adored family books of all time is "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White. From its first publication back in 1952 it has maintained its fame all through. The book was first made into an cartoon motion picture in 1973. In December 2006, a live action big screen version was released. Both of the movies very intimately followed the story of the book.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved kids writers of all times. A few of his books have been made into great movies. "Horton Hears a Who" came out in 2008 with Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton. This is an cartoon feature film that follows the storyline of the book very nearly unerringly.

Another Seuss classic, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" was made into an animated edition in 1966 and it still shows on many program entertainment guide for the duration of the holiday time. The cartoon rendering follows the tale faithfully. On the other hand, in the year 2000, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" the live action adaptation came out with Jim Carrey in the lead character as the Grinch. In that movie many new events and scenes were added. In the 2003 edition of "The Cat and the Hat" also by Dr. Seuss, liberties were again taken and the story was added to with events and scenes not found in the book.

One of the peak grossing film series of all times is from the family books on the subject of Harry Potter written by J.K. Rowling. At this point six of the 7 books have been made into movies with a plan to make two movies from the 7th episode for a total of 8 movies. This series is the 2nd premier grossing series in times gone by after James Bond.

Kids books often turn into films that are enjoyable for the entire family to view. Reading the books aloud to your kids and watching the movies concurrently is a wonderful family pastime, where fantastic memories can be made. - 23815
