The iPod Touch Second Generation (16 GB) Review

By Larry Williams

Many people consider the iPod touch to be the ugly stepchild of the iPhone. After all, an iPhone lets you surf the web, listen to music, watch videos and download applications. Oh, and it's also a cell phone. Of course, everything before 'Oh, and it's also a cell phone' applies to the iPod Touch as well.

Like the iPhone, the iPod Touch uses a touch screen interface, and it lets you play nearly every media file format known to man. It can run many, but not all, iPhone applications. And without having to support a cellular phone's innards, it's a little lighter, a little thinner, and doesn't run down the battery quite as quickly.

The interest in the iPod Touch boils down to the fact that without the cell phone circuitry, it's not only cheaper, but it lasts longer on a charge off of the battery. It's also been refreshed with a hardware volume control, and the internal speaker has gotten a couple of subtle improvements.

As a music player, the iPod touch is excellent. It's got great sound quality, and because it doesn't have to share space inside the body with a cell phone antenna, the speakers have gotten a much more vibrant response. It plays back audio better than the iPhone does.

The new iPod touch from Apple is very attractive, and you will agree once you witness it for yourself. With its steel backing and sleek design, what else could you want in an iPod? The external controls not only make operating the iPod easy, but it also provides versatile options for those who are always on the go. There is no doubt that the built-in speaker will cause many people on the street to stop and wonder, and it will not be because of the music you are playing but the sound that has improved since the previous version of the iPod and also the popular iPhone 3G.

One of the other reasons for the improved audio performance of the iPod touch is because it doesn't have to scale things back to accommodate a cellular phone radio. However, other additions in the second generation device are worthy of note - there's more memory on the device - 16 gigs allows for a lot of storage of video and audio.

Whether it's classical, rock or punk, the iPod touch will handle all the dynamic range of the music - from the clearest cymbals to the richest horns to the sharpest bass notes. Whatever it is, your iPod touch can handle the quality and make you proud.

The sound quality on the speaker is good, but with digital music, high quality head phones will make it sound even better. Just remember, the iPod touch has evolved, and if you're a music lover, you want one. - 23815
