311 Shows Promise With the Release of Music

By Steve Stevenson

Despite going through some tough times before they entered the music scene, 311 has managed to keep their heads focused on creating good music. Despite having troubles with their band line up and their struggle against poverty, they were able to see through and come out with great music.

Each one of their albums are by-products of their extensive touring of the United States and other countries as well. They worked hard to promote their songs which ranged from alternative to rap to funk to heavy metal.

Their first album, Music, was released in 1993. Despite being released more than a decade ago, it can still command attention from fans all over. Its single Do You Right received fair airplay and reached number 27 on the Billboard Modern Rock Charts. But despite this, the album did not do very well when it comes to sales.

This is where one can be confused with identifying a successful song, or album for that matter. Usually, we only say a song or record is successful when it is topping the charts and selling like pancakes. When an album reaches a gold or platinum status, then it is considered a success, or when the record brings nods and recognition from different award giving bodies.

Success of a song or record is relative. It doesn't have to always be at the top of the charts to be truly considered successful. Personally, it doesn't matter if a record rules the airwaves or not, it's the quality of the songs. A perfect example is 311's Music.

With this record, the band compiled all of their LPs. Some of the songs included in the album are Do You Right, Feels So Good, and Fat Chance. These three tracks have been widely popular because of their amazing quality. The album as a whole is a very good listening experience. These are also constantly played during the band's shows.

The album has a mix of relaxing tunes and upbeat songs that will make you want to get up and groove to the music. Nick Hexum was able to come up with great loud music, the kind that does not irritate you. Even though you are not a rock music fan, you will surely appreciate what 311 plays in the record. Tim Mahoney, Chad Sexton, SA MArtinez equally impress with their respective instruments. Collectively, they were able to create a good mixture of excellent tunes and great lyrics. The songs will definitely not disappoint you.

Insert 311's Music in your CD players and don't take it out. You can listen to it for months without getting tired of it. That is how great the CD is. This proves that a record doesn't have to be the hottest thing in the music scene to be considered a success. With the right team of talented musicians, you can. - 23815
