Frank Miller: A Short History
Frank Miller is one of the greatest comic book minds to ever live. He was born in Maryland in 1957, although he was raised chiefly in Vermont. From a young age, he always knew he wanted to be an artist.
Miller got his first job working on the comic book version of the Twilight Zone series. He did well there, and moved up the ranks through DC Comics and eventually to Marvel, although at this point all the jobs were relatively small.
Miller got his first big break while working on the comic Daredevil. Like with his previous work, his signature style made people appreciate the comics on a deeper level, and Miller was able to express himself fully.
The character of Batman was next on Miller's list of accomplishments. DC Comics gave him the chance to craft his own short series, and the result was fantastic. Miller singlehandedly altered the Batman image in to something more dark and powerful.
Frank Miller was able to completely reverse the image many people held of Batman, which was based on the "BAM" and "POW" antics of the 1960s television show. In fact, ever since Miller's adaptation, Batman has held the more dark persona than the campy one.
1991 was the year that Miller debuted perhaps his most noticed work, Sin City. He worked on it for most of the 1990s, writing and drawing the stories completely by himself. His work on Sin City further expanded his influence, even outside the comic book world.
Recently, Frank Miller started writing Batman comics again, perhaps feeling the need to return to his roots. The current work is a story about Batman and Al-Qaeda, which has not been released yet but is bound to be interesting.
Miller's success has been transferred from the comics to the movies. As stated, Sin City was a popular film, as was the Spartan-based film 300. Not all of Miller's works have been successful, though, as evidenced by the horrible movie The Spirit. - 23815
